Billiken

How did the Labubu of 1908-1911 survive pop culture oblivion in a collection of diverse roles and international locales?

In the lead up to a long-delayed family trip to Japan, which finally happened in fall 2023, we were watching a YouTube video about using ATMs in Osaka. I was surprised to see a Billiken statue in the background, as I was only aware of them as an Alaska Native made tourist trinket. After a quick Google search, we added a side-trip through Osaka’s Shinsekai neighborhood to our plans, which was a delight (as was Osaka in general). Since my return, I’ve been researching and organizing my thoughts, and planning some future travels to document these traditions more fully.
